The work group WHAT IF I CHAT WITH MYSELF – Closed Circuit Video Chat (CCVC) shows the video recordings of people who were in a closed-circuit situation that was created by the manipulation of the video chat service „Chatroulette“. The recording took place until „Chatroulette“ requested a mobile number to verify the user profile and then blocked any further use of the website.
For the experimental set-up a webcam was placed with a tripod in front of a computer screen which showed the website of a video chat service „Chatroulette“. This service is supposed to connect two randomly selected users in a video chat and allow them to communicate via webcam, microphone and keyboard. However since the web cam was installed to capture exactly the chat partner’s video chat window a closed circuit situation arose. The chatting person is not connected as usual to a randomly selected user but sees their own image in the video chat window – she looks into a digital mirror. In doing so she makes the experience of the synchronicity of her action with its representation which is similar to the mirror image but not as usual right-left reversed. The person is in a present situation as well as in a medially expanded reality and is at the same time actor and spectator.

Die Werkgruppe WHAT IF I CHAT WITH MYSELF – Closed Circuit Video Chat (CCVC) zeigt eine Videoaufzeichnung von Personen, die sich in einer Closed-Circuit-Situation befinden, die durch die Manipulation des Video-Chat-Service „Chatroulette“ erzeugt wird. Die Aufzeichnung findet so lange statt, bis „Chatroulette“ zur Verifizierung des Nutzerprofils eine Handynummer verlangt und jedes weitere Benutzen der Website blockiert hat. Der genaue Aufbau der Installation ist anhand eines Schaubildes erklärt.
Für den Versuchsaufbau ist eine Webcam mit Hilfe eines Stativs vor einem Computer-Bildschirm positioniert, der die Website eines Video-Chat-Service anzeigt. Dieser Service soll eigentlich zwei zufällig ausgewählte Nutzer in einen Chat zu zweit verbinden und ihnen ermöglichen, sich per Webcam, Mikrofon und Tastatur zu verständigen. Da die installierte Kamera jedoch so justiert ist, dass sie exakt das Fenster des Chat-Partners der Video-Chat-Website aufnimmt, entsteht eine Closed-Cicuit-Situation. Die chattende Person wird nicht wie üblich, mit einem zufällig ausgewählten Nutzer verbunden, sondern sieht ihr eigenes Abbild im Video-Chat-Fenster – sie blickt in einen digitalen Spiegel. Dabei macht sie die Erfahrung der Synchronität ihrer Handlung mit deren Abbildung, ähnlich wie im Spiegelbild, aber nicht wie gewohnt seitenverkehrt. Die Person befindet sich in einer gegenwärtigen Situation, als auch in einer medial erweiterten Realität und ist dabei Akteur und Zuschauer zugleich.
